We are pleased that you are exploring the graduate academic and research opportunities available to you at
Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS).
SEAS offers its graduate students a unique mix of educational advantages. Students benefit from the type of
personal attention associated with small colleges as well as from the extensive academic resources of a major
research institution. Senior faculty members with outstanding research reputations both teach and advise
graduate students, and the faculty-student ratio is exceptionally high. In addition, the School's location
allows students to draw on New York City's unparalleled range of engineering, cultural, and intellectual
activities.
With the New York metropolitan area fast becoming a national contender in high-technology research,
comparable to Boston and the San Francisco Bay area, Columbia students have exceptional opportunities for
contact with industry. Nearby companies include AT&T Laboratories, Telcordia Technologies, Exxon Research,
IBM Research Laboratories, Analog Devices, Brookhaven National Laboratories and Verizon. Many senior officers
from these companies lecture at Columbia, either as adjunct faculty members or as special speakers.
As a result of its research activity in computers, microelectronics and information technologies, the State of
New York awarded SEAS the funding to construct the new Center for Engineering and Physical Science Research
(CEPSR). CEPSR allows University engineers and scientists to collaborate with engineers from industry on
research in the fields of computer science, microelectronics, materials research, intelligent systems,
telecommunications, and condensed matter physics. This new building significantly increases the School's
facilities and permits it to expand its research activities. Also of note are the School's Center for
Telecommunications Research and its Molecular Beam Epitaxy Laboratory.
Thank you for your interest in applying to our program. We look forward to reviewing your application.
